For an overview of all BMD indexes for all the UK, including Scotland and Ireland, see Civil Registration (GENUKI).

The Family Records Centre (FRC) holds the indexes to births, marriages and deaths registered in England and Wales since 1 July 1837. Indexes can also be viewed on-line in both a partial form - though FreeBMD - or in more complete form through commercial sites for a fee, such as 1837online and Ancestry.co.uk. Ancestry is currently not charging for viewing their indexes.

It is not possible to view full details of birth, marriage or death entries at the FRC. This information can only be obtained by purchasing a certified copy of the entry which can then be collected from the FRC after four working days. Alternatively, certificates can be posted to you, also after four working days.

Copies of birth, marriage and death certificates can be ordered online.

Note that t he National Archives (TNA) has announced plans to move its family history services from Myddelton Street to Kew by the end of 2008. The move is part of TNA's Vision for 2006-2011. The aim is to create a dedicated family history area at Kew, including current FRC staff.
